The more birthday parties I photograph, the more I enjoy it. A swimming party is such a fun idea and as you can tell from the photographs, everyone had a blast! Isn't this one of the best "wish" faces you have ever seen? And that birthday outfit...too too cute!!!

I didn't get these posted on Valentine's Day, like I had planned, but I still had to share the love! It was a crazy windy day, not ideal when using a large balloon, but it worked out in the end. :)

This bride to be wants her engagement session in the spring, when it is warm and the flowers are in bloom, but needed to get her save the date postcards out, so we planned a quick mini session. She had pinned a picture on pinterest of a couple holding a knot and knew it was what she wanted to do. Thankfully the day was warm and we were able to get some gorgeous shots. Oh...and did I mention that we both loved how the cards turned out? The vintage feel just seemed right!

We have had such a beautiful winter this year and although personally love sweater weather, the photographer in me is thrilled that it has been so nice. The trees had lost most of their leaves, but the park was still a lovely setting. Family pictures are always extra special when the family dog gets to join in. :)

Newborns and Etsy are the perfect pair. It is always so much fun to walk into a house where mom has gone a little etsy crazy! Some of the headbands were a bit big, but they were all adorable and I plan on ordering a few of the diaper covers myself. I'm sharing a bit more than usual, but I just couldn't seem to narrow it down this time.

Dad plays the guitar and they both really wanted it incorporated into some of the shots. I loved how these turned out.

Ok...my last post wasn't quite all 24 sessions. Two of them were birthday parties and I decided to give them their own post. You just can't get the feel of a party from two images! Plus, I am in the birthday party zone right now, since my youngest will be turning 4 in a few weeks and oh how I love planning parties for my girls!

This party had it all, a petting zoo and pony rides in the front yard, bounce house in the living room, and cupcakes to decorate in the kitchen, plus a house full of family and friends to enjoy.

Wow. I didn't realize just how behind I had become on my blog. There are 24 sessions from 2011 that I didn't get posted and I am already two behind this year. Instead of trying to post each individual session, I will just have to group them together. I would just start fresh with 2012, but with so many fabulous sessions, I can't NOT share them with you. :)

A quick mini session on a very cold morning...

So glad they brought their vintage cars along. The second shot was just snapped, not planned, but has to be one of my favorites of 2011.

A year ago I tool pictures of litte miss Annabella when she was just a couple of weeks old. No one knew at the time that she had a health problem that was going to require extended stays at Children's Medical Center and ultimately a liver transplant. I am happy to say that she is on her way to a full recovery! Happy First Birthday little one!!!

It wasn't planned, but when I got home to process pictures, I thought about how fitting these were, with the one red balloon, since it is a symbol of Children's Medical Center. Annabella's story was featured on a documentary about the hospital this summer. You can read more about it here.

I couldn't let too much time pass without sharing how proud I am of my oldest daughter. We moved into a new house this summer, which meant starting 4th grade at a new school. When she came home and told me that she planned to run for Student Council Vice President, the first thing I thought was that she should stick with class rep this year, since she still didn't know very many people. I didn't want to discourage her, though, so instead I encouraged her to work extra hard and go the extra mile. She is very different than I was at her age. Outgoing and brave wasn't me at all! Five students ran for the office of VP, but only one person started with a song. She was so nervous that I could see her hands shaking, but she did it and did it well!

If you know me, you know that I don't "do" weddings. Now don't get me wrong. I love weddings. I love the gorgeous dresses, the beautiful flowers, the intimate moments. But with all the fun comes a ton of stress! Being asked to photograph this wedding was such an honor that I had to accept and I am so glad that I did. Tory is practically family. I love this family. Their oldest daughter was in my kinder class at church and she was the sweetest thing. I couldn't believe how much they had all grown since our last session over a year ago. I'm sure their oldest son felt the same way. It was his first time back home since I last saw them. He has been off serving our country and I have no doubt that they were glad to have him home. This was such a fun session. I couldn't believe it when she told me her son was four the last time they had family pictures taken. As parents we all know how fast those days turn into weeks and years. I'm sure it seems like only yesterday when her High School Senior walked into his first day of Kindergarten...

After many weeks of bed rest, it was finally time for Baby Jakes to make an appearance. He was early, but thankfully it wasn't too early. No NICU for this little guy! This was my first time to see a baby, other than my own, being born and it was an amazing experience. Memories of my three girls' births flashed through my mind and I was once again reminded of the awesome power of our Creator.

Elyssa's Night Owl Party

Speaking of birthdays, I never shared any details from my oldest daughter's birthday party last Spring. She wanted something fun, but not too girly. I had already picked up a ton of cute owl stuff from the dollar section at Target. The camping part kept it from being to frilly. I couldn't help but laugh!

I found ideas for cupcakes (http://www.duncanhines.com/recipes/cupcakes/dh/owl-cupcakes) and treat bags with owl smores (http://www.livinglocurto.com/2010/09/owl-smores/) on-line. Both of the recipes are easy to follow and Elyssa really enjoyed helping. Since we had owl cupcakes, I went with a campfire cake. I ended up putting a few different ideas together. The "cake" was really Betty Crocker® Mississippi Mud Supreme Bars. The pit was made using chocolate rocks, the logs were twix bars, and then I just added some small touches like toasted marshmallows for coals. Then I made sure there were plenty of worms, bugs, and trail mix to snack on! We also roasted marshmallows for smores and cooked our hot dogs in a fire pit.

The highlight of the night for most girls was dissecting owl pellets. I ended up ordering them from Amazon and each girl had a partner. This worked out well, because not everyone wanted to participate! The girls also set up their tent, painted rocks, made bracelets and enjoyed playing games in the tent with flashlights. I am anything but a camper, but sleeping in the backyard (in my own little tent with Miss B and her friend Ella) was certainly worth it. I know this will always be one of her favorite themes!

I do believe that I am starting to love photographing birthday parties as much as planning them. Each one is so unique. I look forward to seeing the different themes, locations, and activities...maybe gleaning some new ideas for myself! The best part, though, has to be all of the spontaneous smiles. Of course, I am a sucker for the quiet thoughtful moments, too, when you catch a child deep in play or thought. The change in job description is nice, too. No directions to give, just capturing life as it happens.

Big brothers...I always thought it would be fun to have one. Both of these little girls look like they are growing up with great ones! The birthday boy has been posing for my camera for three years now, so I have had the opportunity to watch him with his baby sister from the beginning. He is so protective of her. As I photographed the older siblings, I noticed that the hug and loves from baby sister weren't quite as appreciated, especially in public, but the affection was absolutely still there. I may not have had an older brother, but I wouldn't trade my little brothers for anything.

One of the things I love best about this area are all the wildflowers that grow in fields and along the roadside. I have learned, though, that you can't always depend on them being there the next time. I had spotted the perfect patch to take my girls and some one mowed them down before I made it out there. Uuugh!!! Thankfully there were plenty of flowers for these sessions.

Purple Princess Party...~ Elaina Beth Turns 3!

My beautiful spunky little girl had a fabulous party on Sunday. We had been talking about this party for months and she was so excited when she finally figured out that her birthday had arrived (it wasn't until I told her she could put on her "I'm the birthday girl" shirt for church). After church, while I was finishing the cake and cupcakes and getting everything put together, she walked up, grabbed my leg, looked up at me and said, "Thank you for making my princess party mommy." It just melted my heart and made my week. The time crunch I was feeling at this point was totally worth it!

I am not a baker, but I was really pleased with how the castle cake turned out. I used tin cans from tomato sauce, tomato paste, and a large can of corn to bake the towers. Rice crispy treat wands made a pretty centerpiece and were perfect for sending home for favors. Marshmallow fluff sandwiches (grape jelly and marshmallow cream) and cucumber sandwiches. The hunt for all food purple was quite successful. I found grape Mike and Ikes, dark chocolate hershey kisses in purple wrappers, gummy hearts, gumdrops, and even grape licorice. Blue corn chips and queso were made a nice snack for the adults at the party.

As pretty as everything turned out it was the games that were the big hit. We made coat of arms to put on tunics, and wore them for knight practice. Pool noodles made great lances! I had planned to have princess practice balancing books and learning to bow and curtsy, but being a knight was much more fun. We also had little mermaid races using green crepe paper streamers. Between games the kids played in a castle full of bubbles (pop up castle tent with a bubble machine by one of the doors). For the last two games we moved inside. We played pass the poison apple and each child got to pick their own small apple after they were out and freeze dance finished off the games. All the kids were so much fun to watch and I am so thankful that God blessed us with such a beautiful day, since we have missed the last three days of school due to snow and ice.

I found the favor bags in the dollar section at Target months ago. The necklace, ring, and bracelet came together in a package all for $1, too. And the chapstick came from the dollar section a few months later, three for a dollar. The tiara was just pipe cleaner and beads. Glitter play dough stars were easy and so cute. Elaina and Elyssa both helped me cut them out. The boys didn't get the jewelry or tiara, but I ordered some cute crowns from Oriental Trading that even the girls loved.

You will notice that my princess is showing her Lainy B personality. Although I wish she had left on the gorgeous dress that my mom made for her, I have to admit that her purple leotard and frog rain boots make me smile!

A new baby captures your heart the instant you find out he is coming and the moment he arrives is indescribable. This little guy arrived with a lot of prayers lifting him up. Miraculously, his heart was able to be fixed with one surgery instead of the anticipated three. Now he is a happy healthy baby. The power of prayer is undeniable. Of course, we can't forget the amazing technology and skills of the doctors at Children's. Although my memories of that hospital are sad and painful, I now have something to smile about when I see their logo. There are things in this world that we will not understand until we are standing face to face with Jesus, but I am thankful that I can rest in the knowledge of His everlasting love and the comfort of a peace that only He can give.

I just love the theme of this weeks challenge. Although there were a couple of big eyed little girls looking innocently at the camera that were quite captivating, I had to go with this one. It is such a special moment that happened right in front of my camera. Big brother, lovingly taking the hand of his new sister...baby sister watching her brother with such love and joy in her eyes. This is without a doubt one of my favorites!

I had absolutley no idea, when I started planning our Disney trip, how much work would be involved. Meals have to be booked far in advance and how do you choose where to eat when you have never been there before? If you are eating in the park, then you have to know what park you will visit on which day in order to make the dinner reservation. Plus, I was planning for multiple families, so it was easy to second guess my choices. There are books and websites dedicated to helping you make the best decisions, but be prepared to read read read! Once we landed in Florida, though, I decided to quite stressing over details. We got up when we were ready to get up, skipped the lines that were too long to stand in, and didn't make it back to the hotel once for a nap. And do you know what???? Everyone had a wonderful time. The girls loved all the characters, the food was much better than I expected, and although our feet were tired, the walking and waiting in line wasn't bad at all. I do wish we would have been able to stay a few more days and had stayed at the hotel and rested on day 4, but other than that, I wouldn't change much at all. I am thankful that my brother and his family and my mom were able to join us. It can be hard to share your "family" vacation, especially since we don't take them very often, but it was so nice spending time together. Although Elyssa only sees her cousin once every couple of years, they really seem to enjoy each other's company and I love watching how they interact with each other. Elaina took right to Baby Jay and even gave him her own little nickname. This was a fantastic vacation and was worth every bit of the planning.

For those of you wondering, I didn't take my "good" camera. I just didn't want to have to worry about lugging it around or keeping an eye on it. So, I bought a Canon Powershot S95 off of Craigslist. It is small enough for the little cell phone pocket on my little purse. I wish I had had more time to learn to use all the features before we left, but it is obviously a great little point and shoot. I am suppose to sell it now that we are back home, but that is going to be easier said than done. :)

Wow...I looked back and realized just how many sessions never made it to my blog. It may take a while, but I am going to try and go back and share at least a few images from each session. I have such wonderful clients and has so many fabulous sessions the past few months. 2010 was an amazing year for my photography. Through a lot of reading and discussing, my ability as a photographer grew tremendously and as it did, so did my client list! Being a stay at home mom to a busy toddler, volunteering at church and school, and the holiday rush really took its toll on my organization skills. Thank goodness for the ease of facebook, which at least allowed me to give everyone a bit of a sneak peek from their session!

Ok...now I am just babbling. On to this gorgeous family. Ben and Kristen are two of my dearest friends from college. Although I don't see them near often enough, I was truly honored when they asked me to come down for some family pictures. After a fun filled session, our girls played while we spent a little time catching up. If you are ever in Weatherford, TX you should check out Lifestone Church. Ben is the lead pastor and has a gift for teaching along with an incredible heart for God and people. You won't be disappointed.

Wow...this week was amazingly tough. How do I pick one face when I have two daughters? I love both of their beautiful faces! After way too much thought, I finally picked one. My youngest has been so hard to photograph lately. She has just started the "fake smile when the camera is out phase", that is if she will look at the camera at all. Haha! In this picture, though, I managed to capture that sparkle she has, the way she just lights up when she gets excited. This is the face that can warm even the hardest heart. It is this face that keeps me from staying completely frustrated with my very independent and so completely hard headed almost three year old baby girl.

I feel so bad for not updating my blog lately, but at least I am still posting a few new pictures because of the i heart faces weekly challenges! The theme this week is orange and it immediately reminded me of an incredible nursery from a session a few weeks ago. I knew I wanted to try and get this shot the moment I saw the crib, but I wasn't sure if I would be able to pull it off. Being the mother of two girls, I love this weeks theme. I have a lot of pink options, but since I am so behind on my blogging, I decided to post a picture from one of this past weekend's sessions. This little girl had the most fabulous curly dark hair and her bedroom was full of pink...imagine that! I almost used a sweet picture of her sitting on the bed surrounded by all the pinkness, but I couldn't resist sharing this one. She just loved being allowed to do something she normally isn't!

This week's theme is close to my heart for another reason, as well. I am so thankful that my grandmother won her battle with breast cancer. She is strong. She is a fighter. She has taught me so much in my life. I love you, Grandma!

I have so many sessions to blog. I can't believe I have let myself get so far behind, but I just haven't been able to squeeze everything in.

The morning we scheduled this session turned out to be rather cold and dreary. Miss M's mood seemed to mimic the weather, but we still went away with some great images. We did meet back up a couple of days later to get some more "smily" shots. Of course, the family picture where both twins are upset and mom and dad look like they have had enough is still my favorite shot...maybe of the year. Nicole was actually just brushing the hair out of her face, but the click of the camera shows it in an entirely different light!

Home newborn sessions are always a lot of fun. It gives me the opportunity to get a feel for my client's personality. It is also a little more relaxing for the new mom and dad. Newborn sessions tend to drag on for dads, but having a football game to entertain definitely didn't hurt the situation! Thanks, you two, for letting me spend the afternoon at your house. Admit it, there is just something about playing with chalk. Although it is one of our favorite activites around my house, I couldn't seem to find any really great chalk pictures of my two year old. That probably has a lot to do with the fact that she went through a phase where I couldn't keep her fully clothed, but at least it was summer!

Bring your pirates, your fairies, your monkeys, your..... I can't wait to see what costumes everyone is going to have this year. If you participate last year, you know how much fun this can be. For $30 you get a 15 - 20 minute session, an online gallery with 5 images, one 5x7 of your favorite, and a Halloween e-card to send out to all your friends and family. The session is for one child. Siblings can be added for $10 each or book additional sessions for only $20.
The weekend of Halloween, I will post one picture from each session on facebook and my blog and voting will begin! This year's winner will receive a FREE SESSION and a 5x5 or 5x7 metal stand up for their desk. I'll post pictures of the metal stand up as soon as my sample comes in. They are made by transferring an image directly to an aluminum sheet using heat and pressure and come with an acrylic base. I ordered one for a gift not long ago and was quite pleased with how it turned out. I know you are all going to love them!

I can't even describe what a joy it was to photograph my childhood best friend's daughters. We have been friends since we were her youngest daughter's age, and oh how she reminded me of elementary days spent playing with her mom! They even have a lot of the same facial expressions. And beautiful Miss H is growing up so fast. Only a few more years and it will be time to take her Senior pictures. I'm so thankful that God has blessed me with such wonderful friends throughout my life!

Telling a story with an image...it is the part I like best about my job.

These were taken at my daughter's birthday party within moments of each other. You can see the players at the first table were enjoying the conversation even more than the game. Of course, there are many residents at the assited living center that take a game of BINGO very seriously. Can you feel the anger boiling just below the surface in face of the lady in the sweater? I have to say, that over all everyone had a wonderful time.

In the end I was thankful that I hadn't talked my daughter out of her unusual choice of party location. I believe it benefited everyone involved. If you want to know more about her party, I blogged about it here.

I met Esther the last time she was expecting. My husband and I signed up to be a part of a life group Aaron and Esther were leading. At our first meeting we discovered that 5 of us were due within just a few months of each other and there were only about 7 families in the group! Friendships developed quickly among our group, although one of my new found friends threatened to quit...she already had 4 kids at home. It was a fun joke, but she soon learned that leaving was never really an option, since number five was already on the way. :) We have all since moved on to other lifegroups, but the bonds we formed during that time will last forever. I cherish my friendships with these ladies, even if we don't manage to get together quite as often as we would like for our girl's night out.
Thank you for squeezing in a quick session Friday night. Esther, you looked stunning as usual. No one would ever guess that you had just spent your first week back with a classroom full of little ones. And Aaron, thanks for pushing back your appointment. I am so glad we finally managed to get some pictures of your beautiful family. It only took us a year of rescheduling!! Now we just need to find a day to get some good out door shots of the girls. Love you guys.

Fix It Friday | i heart faces | North Dallas Portrait Photography

I don't usually participate in the Fix It Fridays challenge, but I really liked the photo they chose for this week. (not to mention I have a ton of house work I am putting off...lol) A big thanks to Angie Arthur Photography
for the use of her image for this week's challenge.

The first thing I did was pull it into lightroom and made some basic adjustments. Working with a jpg isn't the same as starting with a raw file, but it still worked. I upped the exposure, brightness, and recovery slider a little and then used the brush to bring down the sky and lighten some of the shadows and then used then just warmed it up a bit. I used that version to make some more adjustments in photoshop. The one with Florabella actions is processed with Cosmopolitan set at a lower opacity in one layer and then duplicated on an even lower opacity set to screen. The last version is sharpened with an unsharp mask and then I ran TRA free Slice Like a Ninja (lowered to 25% opacity) and added a light haze.

Teacher Gift Idea - Sticky Note Holder | Mckinney, TX Family Photographer

Ok...I absolutely can not take credit for this idea. I actually received one as a gift and thought it was too cute not to make for the beginning of the school year. One of my friends and I spent an afternoon and made enough for each of our daughters' teachers and her coworkers (since she is a teacher). It was easy and a lot of fun!

Supplies: clear frames from Wal-mart or the Dollar Store
                coordinating scrapbook papers
                ribbon
                sticky note pads
                clear pens (we used Pentel RSVP)
                glue or sticky dots
                paper cutter

Cut your paper to fit the frame. Ours were 4x6 but 5x7 would be good, too. We then cut two sizes of rectangles the largest being 2.5x2 and the other 2x1.5. A cricut would have been perfect to cut the monogram, but since we don't own one...we just did it by hand.  We just glued these pieces on the 4x6 sheet and then slide it into the frame upside down, which allowed the frame to sit at an angle. Two sticky dots on the back of the sticky note pad held it in place. Terifically Tacky Tape from Michaels would work as well. We finished up by using the ribbon to make a bow. Last, but not least. take a 4.5 inch strip of scrap paper, roll it up, and slide it into the barral of the pen and you have a perfectly coordinating set! A small piece of velcro would work perfectly to hold the pen across the bottom of the frame.

You can order bags here if you can't find any at Michaels. Just slip them in a tie with a matching bow!

Back to School

Summer flew by and today it was time to send my oldest back to school. I still can't believe that she is in 3rd grade already. She was excited about school and extra excited about getting to ride her new bike. We found a pink and black one...her favorite color combination. I am so blessed to have her for a daughter. I pray great things for this school year!

I love the beach. Some day, I would love to spend my summers some place like the New Jersey shore. For now, I look forward to the times I get to visit my family on the Oregon coast. We don't get there as often as I would like, but I treasure the times we do. It has been a little over a year since our last trip. My girls loved walking along the shore with their Grandpa Walker. This was one of my favorite pictures from our trip and it just happened to be taken with my little point and shoot. (Guess dad had my good camera at the moment.) Proof that the camera doesn't make the picture!

Sunday night at 7 it was still around 100 degrees outside. We were all pouring sweat, but this sweet baby girl still managed to smile. It wasn't long before the warmth lulled her to sleep. Three month pictures are often tough. Newborns are tiny and posable. A six month old is stronger, can often sit up, and smiles a lot. Well, now I will look at 3 months sessions in a whole new light. I love these!

This beautiful family was visiting from New York this summer before moving to London for two years. I didn't get to meet Mr. Osgood, but I have a feeling he is going to love these images! The interaction between brother and sister was such a joy to watch. They were just so cute together! A sweet friend of Lyndsey's let us use her gorgeous home. I knew from the moment I saw it that it would be the type of place that I would love to own. :) The setting definitely made outfit changes and feedings easy.
